How it works

Formula

TM = 90% of 1RM
Week 1 65/75/85% × 5/5/5+; week 2 70/80/90% × 3/3/3+; week 3 75/85/95% × 5/3/1+; week 4 deload 40/50/60% × 5

Worked example

Given: Squat 1RM 140 kg

  1. TM = 126 kg.
  2. Week 1: 82.5 × 5, 95 × 5, 107.5 × 5+.
  3. Week 3: 95 × 5, 107.5 × 3, 120 × 1+.

Result: Next cycle TM: 131 kg.

Why use 90% of 1RM?

All 5/3/1 percentages are based on a training max of 85–90% of 1RM, leaving room for steady progress.
