How it works

When to use it

  • Combine weighted categories (homework, quizzes, exams) into a course grade.
  • Find the final exam score you need for a target grade.

Formula

Grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σweight
Needed on final = [target − current × (1 − final weight)] ÷ final weight

Worked example

Given: Homework 90 (20%), quizzes 85 (20%), midterm 78 (30%); final worth 30%, target 85

  1. Current = (90×20 + 85×20 + 78×30) ÷ 70 ≈ 83.43.
  2. Needed = (85 − 83.43 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 ≈ 88.67.

Result: You need about 88.67 on the final to finish with an 85.

Reading the result

  • Over 100 means the target is out of reach; below 0 means you've already secured it.

Limitations

  • Check your syllabus for extra rules such as dropped lowest scores or minimum exam requirements.

How to use

  1. 1Enter each category's score and weight.
  2. 2Read your weighted grade.
  3. 3Enter a target to see the final exam score you need.
