How it works

When to use it

  • Set a realistic weight goal using several published formulas.
  • Understand the “ideal body weight” used in some clinical calculations.

Formula

Healthy range = 18.5 × height(m)² to 24.9 × height(m)²
Devine: men 50 + 2.3 × (inches over 5 ft); women 45.5 + 2.3 × (inches over 5 ft)

Robinson, Miller and Hamwi use the same form with different coefficients.

Worked example

Given: Male, 172 cm (5 ft 7.7 in)

  1. Healthy range: 18.5 × 1.72² ≈ 54.7 kg to 24.9 × 1.72² ≈ 73.7 kg.
  2. Devine: 7.72 in over 5 ft → 50 + 2.3 × 7.72 ≈ 67.7 kg.

Result: Formulas cluster around 65–69 kg; the healthy BMI range is 54.7–73.7 kg.

Reading the result

  • Treat the formulas as a range, not a precise target.

Limitations

  • They ignore frame size, muscle mass and age.
  • The Devine family was designed for drug dosing and underestimates for people under 5 ft.

FAQ

What is a healthy weight for 170 cm?

About 53.5–72 kg for BMI 18.5–24.9.

Why do formulas disagree?

They come from different populations; a range is more useful than a single number.
