How it works

When to use it

  • Find X% of a number (tips, tax, commission).
  • Find what percent one number is of another.
  • Find the percentage change between two values.

Formula

A% of B = A ÷ 100 × B
A as a % of B = A ÷ B × 100%
Change = (new − old) ÷ |old| × 100%

Worked example

Given: 20% of 350; 45 out of 60; 80 → 100

  1. 0.2 × 350 = 70.
  2. 45 ÷ 60 = 75%.
  3. (100 − 80) ÷ 80 = +25%.

Result: 70; 75%; up 25%.

Reading the result

  • Percentage change depends on the starting value: 80 → 100 is +25%, but 100 → 80 is −20%.
  • A move from 3% to 4% is 1 percentage point, or a 33.3% increase.

Limitations

  • Percentage change is undefined when the old value is 0.

FAQ

How do I calculate a percentage?

Percentage = part ÷ whole × 100. For example, 30 out of 120 is 30 ÷ 120 × 100 = 25%.

How is percentage change calculated?

Percentage change = (new − old) ÷ old × 100. A positive result is an increase, a negative one a decrease. It is undefined when the old value is 0.
