How it works

Formula

VO₂ = 0.2v + 0.9v × grade + 3.5

ACSM running equation, v in m/min, grade as a decimal.

Flat-equivalent speed = v × (1 + 4.5 × grade)

Worked example

Given: 10 km/h at 3% incline

  1. 10 × (1 + 4.5 × 0.03) = 11.35 km/h.
  2. 3600 ÷ 11.35 ≈ 317 s, i.e. 5:17/km.

Result: Equivalent to 5:17/km on flat ground.

  2. 2Enter the incline in percent.
  3. 3Read the flat-equivalent pace, speed and estimated VO₂.

FAQ

Should I set the treadmill to 1%?

Treadmills have no air resistance. Jones and Doust (1996) found a 1% incline best matches outdoor running at 10.5–18 km/h (about 5:43–3:20 per km); at slower speeds the difference is small.

How accurate is it?

The ACSM equation is for steady aerobic running and works best at 0–15% incline. Individual gait and hill strength vary.
