How it works

Formula

Walking stride ≈ height × 0.415 (men) / 0.413 (women); running stride ≈ 1.57 × walking stride
Distance = steps × stride; calories = MET × weight × hours

Worked example

Given: Man, 170 cm, 65 kg, 10,000 steps at a normal pace

  1. Stride ≈ 70.6 cm, so distance ≈ 7.06 km.
  2. Time ≈ 7.06 ÷ 4.8 ≈ 1.47 h; calories ≈ 3.5 × 65 × 1.47 ≈ 334 kcal.

Result: About 7.06 km (4.4 miles) and 334 kcal.

Limitations

  • Height-based stride can be off by ±10%; measure yours for accuracy.

How to use

  1. 1Choose steps → distance or distance → steps.
  2. 2Enter height and weight and pick a pace; enter your stride length if you know it.
  3. 3See distance, steps, time and calories, plus common step goals.

FAQ

How far is 10,000 steps?

It depends on stride. At 170 cm (5'7") a man's walking stride is about 70 cm, so 10,000 steps ≈ 7 km (4.4 miles).

How is stride length estimated?

Walking stride ≈ height × 0.415 (men) or × 0.413 (women). For accuracy, walk 10 steps, measure, and divide by 10.

Do I need 10,000 steps a day?

Research suggests about 7,000–8,000 steps a day already lowers health risks noticeably; more helps, with diminishing returns.
