How it works

Formula

Average pace = goal time ÷ distance
Negative split: first half = average + d/2, second half = average − d/2

d is the per-km difference between halves; total time stays the same.

Worked example

Given: Half marathon (21.0975 km) in 1:59:59, negative split of 10 s/km

  1. Average = 7199 s ÷ 21.0975 ≈ 341.2 s (5:41/km).
  2. First half 5:46/km, second half 5:36/km.
  3. At 10 km: 346.2 × 10 ≈ 3462 s (0:57:42).

Result: Pass 10 km at about 0:57:42 and finish on time.

Limitations

  • Ignores hills and aid-station stops.
  • GPS distance usually runs long; trust the km markers.

How to use

  1. 1Pick the race distance and enter your goal finish time.
  2. 2Choose the split interval and a pacing strategy; for a negative split, enter the pace difference between halves.
  3. 3Read the split pace and elapsed time at each marker, and print it as a pace band.

FAQ

What pace is a sub-4 marathon?

About 5:41 per km (9:09 per mile). Aim a little faster to leave room for aid stations and weaving.

What is a negative split?

Running the second half faster than the first. Starting conservatively lowers the risk of hitting the wall.

Why does my watch show a longer distance?

Courses are measured on the shortest line; real running and GPS error usually add 0.3–1%. Check elapsed time at the official km markers instead.
