How it works

Formula

Differential = (113 ÷ slope) × (adjusted gross − course rating − PCC)

PCC is taken as 0 here.

Index: average of the lowest 8 of 20; fewer scores use the WHS table (with −2.0/−1.0/−1.0 for 3/4/6 scores)
Course Handicap = Index × (slope ÷ 113) + (rating − par)

Worked example

Given: Five rounds: 95, 92, 98, 90, 94; course to play: rating 72.0, slope 125, par 72

  1. Best differential: (113 ÷ 124) × (90 − 70.8) ≈ 17.5.
  2. With 5 scores, the lowest 1 counts: index 17.5.
  3. Course handicap = 17.5 × 125 ÷ 113 ≈ 19.4 → 19.

Result: Handicap Index 17.5; 19 strokes on this course.

FAQ

How is the index calculated?

Differential = (113 ÷ slope) × (score − rating). With 20 scores, average the best 8; with fewer, the WHS table uses fewer, with adjustments for 3–6 scores.

What's a course handicap?

Index × (slope ÷ 113) + (course rating − par).
